Overview

Completed in 2013, Mersin Stadium is a 25,534-seat football venue designed for the 2013 Mediterranean Games. Located in the Yenişehir district, the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games before beginning its long-term role as a venue for national and international football matches, public events and large-scale gatherings.

Challenge

The project needed to meet FIFA and UEFA requirements while supporting two different modes of use: a ceremonial arena for an international sporting event and a permanent football stadium for the city. The design also had to manage large spectator and vehicle flows, respond to Mersin’s Mediterranean climate and establish a meaningful relationship with its developing urban surroundings.

Solution

BKA developed the stadium as a north–south-oriented elliptical form wrapped in a lightweight, air-permeable membrane. Supported by a steel structure, the continuous envelope gives the building a dynamic identity while covering the spectator stands and allowing natural airflow through the perimeter. Two seating tiers are connected by hospitality, VIP, management, restaurant and corporate facilities. The surrounding landscape and transport plan include pedestrian connections, new bus stops, parking for 1,295 cars and dedicated spaces for 46 buses.

Result

Mersin Stadium became a major civic venue and one of the defining architectural legacies of the 2013 Mediterranean Games. Its continuous elliptical shell creates a recognisable landmark while responding to the city’s warm coastal climate. Beyond football, the stadium was planned to accommodate ceremonies, concerts, exhibitions and other public events, extending its role as a social centre for Mersin.
