INDOOR NATURAL-ICE RINK

Overview

Van Ice Skating Rink is a public sports and recreation facility located within the Sports Island complex in Edremit. Designed around a refrigerated natural-ice surface, the building introduces a dedicated venue for skating, training and community activities while expanding Van’s growing winter-sports infrastructure.

Challenge

The project required a controlled indoor environment capable of maintaining a consistent ice surface throughout changing seasonal conditions. Temperature, humidity, lighting and technical systems needed to operate together efficiently, while the building also had to provide a safe and welcoming environment for young athletes, families and first-time skaters.

Solution

The rink is enclosed within a clear, compact volume defined by a white geometric envelope. Repeated triangular openings animate the exterior and create a recognizable identity, while controlled glazed areas connect the public spaces with the activity inside. The double-height skating hall brings the ice surface, spectator areas and circulation into a single visual environment. Tiered seating, a glazed viewing level and supporting social spaces allow visitors to observe activities without interrupting the movement of skaters. Training, changing, rest and technical areas are positioned around the rink as an integrated operational system.

Result

Completed in 2025 and opened to the public at the beginning of 2026, the facility established a new centre for winter sports in Van. Its combination of athletic infrastructure and accessible social spaces supports introductory training, recreational skating and the future development of figure skating and ice hockey within the region.
