Overview
Neşet Ertaş Cultural Center is a major public cultural complex designed by Bahadır Kul Architects for the Municipality of Kırşehir. Named after Neşet Ertaş—one of the defining voices of Anatolian folk music—the project brings performance, exhibition, education and community programmes together within an 18,000-square-metre building. Its programme includes a 1,000-seat concert and theatre hall, a smaller multipurpose hall, seminar rooms, exhibition galleries, foyers, workshops, museum spaces, association rooms and administrative facilities.
Challenge
The project was conceived as both a contemporary cultural institution and a place carrying the memory of Neşet Ertaş and his relationship with Kırşehir and Anatolia. The primary challenge was to accommodate a dense and varied public programme without producing an introverted cultural building disconnected from the city. Large performance halls, educational spaces, exhibitions, workshops and community functions needed to operate independently while remaining part of a coherent public experience. Kırşehir’s continental climate also required careful control of solar exposure, heat loss and daylight throughout the building.
Solution
The rectangular building is positioned along an east–west axis, allowing the northern elevation to form a more enclosed and thermally controlled edge. A perforated metal second skin moderates sunlight and heat while giving the building a changing visual depth throughout the day. Rather than presenting the cultural center as a single monumental volume, BKA divided its mass through entrances, internal voids and interconnected public spaces. These openings create a more inviting relationship with the city and allow cultural activity to extend beyond the enclosed performance halls. A central courtyard brings daylight, solar gain and landscape into the heart of the complex. The concert hall, multipurpose hall, seminar spaces, workshops, foyers and exhibition areas are organized around this shared internal world. A digital media façade further connects the building with its surroundings, allowing performances, announcements and cultural content to become visible within the public realm.
Result
Completed in 2017, Neşet Ertaş Cultural Center establishes a new civic and cultural destination for Kırşehir. The project combines a 1,000-seat performance hall with a broad network of exhibition, education and community spaces, enabling the building to support events at different scales throughout the year. Its climate-responsive envelope, internal courtyard and porous public circulation transform the conventional cultural center into a more open and dynamic institution—one in which architecture, performance and public life remain continuously connected.
