Overview

Completed in 2010, Nevşehir Bus Terminal is an 8,000-square-metre transportation hub located on the Aksaray road, five kilometres from the city centre. Designed by Bahadır Kul Architects for Nevşehir Municipality, the project combines the operational requirements of regional travel with an architectural identity shaped by Cappadocia’s landscape, material character, and carved geological formations.

Challenge

The project was commissioned to replace an existing terminal that could no longer meet the city’s transportation needs. The new building had to strengthen connections between the city centre, Aksaray, and the regional Niğde route while organising passenger, vehicle, service, and commercial movements within a clear and protected public environment.

Solution

BKA translated Cappadocia’s natural stone textures, recessed cavities, irregular voids, and sense of shelter into a sculpted architectural form. Deep openings protect passengers from rain and sun, while transparent surfaces create strong visual connections between the passenger lobby, waiting halls, cafés, platforms, and external circulation areas.

Result

The completed terminal brings regional bus operations, passenger facilities, commercial functions, and public circulation together within a single recognisable structure. Its carved massing, sheltered voids, and stone materiality allow a large transportation building to belong to its distinctive landscape, creating a contemporary civic gateway rather than an anonymous piece of infrastructure.
