Overview

BK House is a 450-square-metre private residence located in the Çaybağları district of Kayseri, within close reach of the city centre and the natural landscape surrounding Mount Erciyes. Designed for a family of four, the house is one of four residences developed on the same site through a shared architectural concept. Its cubic form, open-plan interior and carefully positioned openings establish a balance between urban connection, domestic privacy and expansive views of Mount Erciyes. The project combines a minimal contemporary language with the warmth and familiarity expected from a family home.

Challenge

The central challenge was to create a residence that could remain connected to the city while offering a private and independent way of living. The compact cubic volume needed to provide generous living spaces, strong visual relationships between different levels and a continuous connection with the surrounding landscape. Transparency was essential for daylight and views, but had to be carefully controlled to maintain domestic privacy. The project also sought to reconcile two apparently contrasting qualities: the visual clarity of minimalist architecture and the material warmth of an inhabited family home.

Solution

The ground floor is conceived as the social centre of the house. The entrance, living room, dining area and kitchen are brought together within a continuous open-plan space rather than being divided into separate rooms. A central double-height gallery connects the principal living areas with the upper levels. From the living room, different parts of the house can be perceived across the gallery void, creating a greater sense of volume, continuity and interaction between family members. Large glazed openings bring natural light deep into the interior and frame selected views toward Mount Erciyes. More private functions, including the bedrooms, are arranged with a restrained material and furniture palette to create quieter spaces for rest. The exterior combines glass, timber and aluminium composite panels within a clear cubic composition. Internally, timber flooring and joinery introduce warmth, while black elements and muted colour accents add depth to the otherwise light and minimal spaces.

Result

Completed in 2014, BK House creates a contemporary family residence defined by openness, visual continuity and a close relationship with the surrounding landscape. The project demonstrates how a restrained architectural language can remain warm and domestic. Its double-height centre, connected living spaces and carefully framed views transform a compact cubic volume into a spacious and layered home.
