Overview

Karagümrük Stadium is a 7,680-seat football venue planned on the site of the former Vefa Stadium in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district. Developed as the new home of Fatih Karagümrük Sports Club, the project brings professional football back into the neighbourhood while creating a contemporary venue for the club, its supporters and future generations. More than a match-day facility, the stadium is conceived as a permanent part of Karagümrük’s social and sporting identity. Its programme combines UEFA-standard stadium infrastructure with spaces supporting athletes, media, hospitality, administration and youth development.

Challenge

The central challenge is to introduce a contemporary football stadium into a dense and historically significant urban setting without losing the direct relationship between the club, its supporters and the neighbourhood. The project must coordinate secure access, crowd distribution, evacuation, media operations, hospitality, team facilities and service circulation within a constrained site. At the same time, it must preserve the intensity and collective memory associated with Karagümrük’s historic home ground.

Solution

The design is organised around a compact football bowl that brings spectators close to the pitch and strengthens the atmosphere of the game. Clearly separated circulation routes for spectators, athletes, officials, media and service personnel support safe and efficient match-day operations. Public-facing areas and youth-oriented functions extend the building’s role beyond professional fixtures. Rather than treating the stadium as an isolated object, the project positions it as a civic gathering place rooted in the red-and-black identity and long sporting history of Karagümrük.

Result

Currently under development, Karagümrük Stadium is intended to return the club to its home district and establish a lasting gathering place for its supporters. With 7,680 seats and contemporary UEFA-standard facilities, the project aims to strengthen Fatih’s sporting infrastructure while carrying the identity and collective memory of Karagümrük into a new generation.
