Overview
Van Sports Hall is a 5,000-seat indoor arena designed to support the city’s sporting and public-event infrastructure. The 16,000-square-metre building brings together a large central competition hall, spectator seating, athlete facilities, administrative areas and technical functions within a compact architectural organisation. Designed for both regular community use and major sporting events, the project establishes a contemporary indoor venue capable of accommodating different users and operational requirements.
Challenge
The project required a large-capacity indoor arena that could operate efficiently during sporting events while remaining functional for everyday training and public use. The movement of 5,000 spectators needed to be coordinated with the independent circulation of athletes, referees, officials, media representatives, VIP guests and service personnel. These different groups required clearly defined entrances, controlled routes and direct connections with their respective facilities. A further challenge was to integrate the main competition hall, spectator concourses and extensive supporting programme within a clear and compact building volume.
Solution
The spatial organisation is centred on a large-span multi-purpose arena surrounded by spectator seating and circulation areas. Public foyers distribute visitors toward the stands, while supporting functions are positioned around the central hall to maintain short and efficient connections. Athlete changing rooms, referee facilities, administrative offices, media spaces, technical rooms and service areas are organised as part of an independent operational network. This separation allows public and professional functions to operate simultaneously without unnecessary circulation conflicts. The building’s entrance hierarchy makes the different user routes legible from the exterior. A compact envelope brings the extensive programme together within a single civic volume, while the internal organisation prioritises orientation, controlled access and efficient event management. The central arena is conceived as a flexible space capable of supporting different indoor sports, training sessions and large public events.
Result
Completed in 2014, Van Sports Hall provides the city with a contemporary 5,000-seat venue for sport and public events. The project consolidates spectator, athlete, administrative and technical functions within a coordinated arena structure. Its clear circulation hierarchy and flexible central hall allow the building to respond to different event scales and patterns of use.
