Overview

Kayseri West City Bus Terminal is a regional transportation facility designed to serve the districts and villages located west of Kayseri. The project brings previously dispersed transport operators together within a coordinated terminal, improving passenger access while helping to reduce the movement of regional buses through the city centre. Located approximately eight kilometres from central Kayseri, the terminal was positioned near the city’s intercity bus terminal, the former ring road and an existing rail transit axis. These connections allow the building to operate as part of a wider transportation network rather than as an isolated facility.

Challenge

The principal challenge was to accommodate two different transportation systems—the district terminal and the village terminal—within a compact public building. Although both passenger groups needed to share certain services, each terminal required its own foyer, ticket offices, platforms and operational identity. The building therefore had to create separation without fragmentation, allowing passengers to understand the terminal immediately and move easily between waiting areas, ticket offices and departure platforms. The project also required a distinctive roadside presence capable of making a relatively small public building visible and recognisable within a large transportation site.

Solution

The terminal is organised around a continuous, stone-clad wall that extends through the building in a stretched Z-shaped configuration. Transparent passenger foyers are inserted into this solid surface from two different directions, creating separate yet connected spaces for district and village passengers. Full-height glazing maintains direct visual connections between the waiting areas and exterior platforms, helping passengers understand vehicle movements and departure points. Independent ticket offices serve each terminal, while restrooms, technical areas and other supporting functions are consolidated for shared use. A broad roof plane unifies the programme beneath a single architectural gesture. Inclined red columns support the projecting roof and introduce a dynamic visual element that strengthens the terminal’s identity when viewed from the surrounding roads

Result

Completed in 2009, Kayseri West City Bus Terminal demonstrates how a modest transportation building can combine operational clarity with a strong civic presence. The contrast between the massive stone wall, transparent foyers, inclined structural elements and extended roof creates a recognisable piece of public infrastructure. Its compact organisation brings district and village transport services together while preserving the independent operation of each terminal.
